Edward J. Seymour

Lord Edward James Seymour, Marquess of Hertford, is the fifth holder of his title. Lord Seymour took over the title and the family's estates after the passing of his father. The family's ancestral seat is known as Ragley Hall in Warwickshire, close to Stratford-upon-Avon and Alcester. The family spends most of their time in this residence, but often go to their town home in London - Hertford House.

The former marquess was known as a deeply conservative and stoic politician, serving in the House of Lords. He was known to balk at any attempts of reform and with a particular interest in Britain's position as a great military power. For those that knew the former Lord Seymour, it was apparent that he had a difficult relationship to his heir apparent. The young lord Edward did not share his father's philosophies, and his father often complained that he did everything 'out of a sense of duty and obligation, not interest'.

Instead, the young lord spent most of his time in the London townhouse and quickly developed a bit of a reputation in high society - parties, societies, a patron of the arts, always the last to leave any social event - and often involved in a scandal or two. It was only his father's intervention that ensured he started his military education at the Royal Military College (RMC) in a last attempt at saving his reputation. Even so, the young lord still managed to maintain his questionable reputation whenever he could escape to London for a couple of days, and much to the frustration of many eligible young women, never proposed. He was still unmarried when his father passed from a heart attack, just as the Crimean War broke out and the new Marquess of Hertford had to report for duty.
